Grade 7

Number Sense

2 Exponents lessons (Doina)

Working with Percents (Nakesha)
This was the lesson I gave during my Faculty Advisor's visit. I didn't make it through the entire lesson, but through my lesson, I addressed a preconception that students had (the preconception was regarding the fact that fractions are equal parts of a whole). Enjoy!

My first try with manipulatives, working on getting to variables (Julian)

Grade 8

Number Sense

(60 minutes) - Nathan
  • Absolute wonderful discussion based on the Grocery Line open question (ala Dan Meyer). Students were saying and thinking all the right things. Got to bring up Ratios. 90% to 100% engagement! Awesome way to make the distinction between Ratios and Rates!

(45 minutes) - Amy K.
  • Pretty straight forward lesson on ratios and rates but the students got the concepts really well thanks to real world examples. The manipulatives also got the students interested in the topics off the bat. YEY ratios and rates!

(60 minutes) - Amy K.
  • I used this SMART notebook lesson that I made on the projector to go over place holders and how to set up equations with my students since this is something they seemed to be really struggling with. It worked out great and I used the clickers at the beginning and the end of the lesson for the multiple choice questions. Students were really engaged and participated a lot.

Measurement

(Jess Stone)

Here's a lesson I did on determining circumference. I started off with a story for the Sir Circumference Series (I wanted to read the one called Dragon of Pi but it wasn't available). Then after reading I did a quick review of what is diameter, radius and circumference. Then we did a Twizzler activity (explained in the lesson plan) which worked out really well. The students loved it, and my faculty advisor said it was a great lesson. By Girthiga :)

Green project (Kathryn Navarro)
  • here is a project I made up for the students on circles
  • the students were really into it and one of the groups went above expectataions and made a model
  • this project includes several disciplines including media, religion, art, drama, and of course math.

Exploring Sample Size (Michelle K)
Histograms (Michelle K)

Inferring and Evaluating (Amy LaRue) - 60 min lesson
  • This lesson extended the introduction to collecting data
  • It taught students why we use data, and what kind of information we can learn and use from collected data
  • This was the only grade 7/8 math lesson I taught during my three weeks
  • Attached is my powerpoint slides I used during the lesson

Communicating about graphs (Samina Salman)
  • This lesson will enable students to analyze different types of graphs
  • Students will be able to draw conclusions based upon thier analysis
